About Midrand
The township of Halfway House was founded in 1920. In July 1981 this area was proclaimed a Town Council and the historic name of Halfway House was changed to Midrand.
Midrand in Gauteng Province is South Africa’s most rapidly developing city and South Africa’s fastest developing investment centre. From its humble beginning as a halfway point between Gauteng’s two major cities Pretoria (also known as the Pretoria) and Johannesburg, it is now the dynamic centre of a metropolitan area, stretching from Centurion in the north, Sandton in the south, Kempton Park to the east and Kyalami to the west. By the year 2015 it is forecast that the population of Midrand will be 20 million, compared to that current of 9 million.
Midrand central business district is home of one of the city’s prime conferencing sites, Gallagher Estate, the seat of the Pan African Parliament and Grand Central Airport. Midrand also offers a variety of places to stay for the traveling businessman or woman like hotels, B&B’s, guesthouses and furnished self-catering houses, townhouses and apartments for long or short term letting.
With easy access to the Johannesburg inner city, the West Rand, Pretoria Central business district and Ekurhuleni, Midrand is ideally placed for metropolitan economic development.
The building of the N1 -Ben Schoeman highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria greatly improved accessibility to the region and resulted in an explosion of growth along the N1 corridor. OR Thambo International airport and Grand Central airport caters for visitors that wants to travel by air to Midrand and the surrounding areas.
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link will make its way through Midrand, on its way from Marlboro to Centurion. A sizable station is to be developed near Grand Central Airport, along with residential and commercial developments around it.
