Midrand is in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was established as a Local Municipality in 1981, but was incorporated into Region 2 of the City of Johannesburg during the late 1990′s and as of 2006, when the number of regions where reduced to seven, it forms part of Region A. Midrand officially ceased to exist in 1998 when Act 15 of 1981 Town Council of Midrand Act was repealed by Act 10 of 1998 Rationalisation of Local Government Affairs Act. Though there is no longer an official Midrand, the name is still on common use to denote the suburbs around the N1 highway north of the Jukskei River up to the border with Tshwane. (This portion of the N1 highway is also known as the Ben Schoeman Highway.) Suburbs that are generally assumed to be in Midrand include among others: Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Kyalami, Vorna Valley and Randjesfontein.
EDUCATION IN MIDRAND
The Midrand Graduate Institute and UNISA’s Graduate School of Business Leadership is located in Midrand. The city is relatively modern, having experienced much growth in the last decade. Many businesses have relocated there due to its proximity to good highway links and its location in the economic centre of Gauteng Province. Midrand’s development has meant there is little break between the outskirts of Johannesburg and those of Pretoria, and the Gauteng Provincial Government envisages that, according to current growth trends, much of the province will be city by 2015. Midrand is also the location of the African Union’s Pan-African Parliament.

Kyalami, an international renowned racetrack is in Midrand and is the venue for many of South Africa’s premier motor racing events. The South Africa Lipizzaners are situated in the smallholdings of Kyalami. Midrand has the largest conference centre in South Africa which is known as Gallagher Estate which was built on the former site of Laerskool/Primary School Halfway House, which subsequently moved to new grounds near the fire station.

Midrand enjoys summer rainfall and typically afternoon thunderstorms of short duration. Mild dry winters are the norm with occasional early morning frost on the Highveld. Average maximum summer temperature in Johannesburg is 25º C, winter 18º C. Pretoria summer 27º C and winter 21º C.

Midrand Graduate Institute: MGI is registered with the Department of Education. In addition to offering registered and accredited programmes, Midrand Graduate Institute has, for many years, also been an official UNISA tuition centre where students are able to receive on-campus, face to face tuition towards UNISA programmes.
South African Lipizzaners: The Lipizzaners are situated in the small holdings of Kyalami. Every Sunday they perform a classical dressage show to classical music in which they skip, trot on the spot, side step, high step, and jump off the ground and kick with their back legs at the same time. See them at 10:00 am every Sunday.
THINGS TO DO IN MIDRAND
South African Lipizzaners: The South African Lipizzaners perform every Sunday morning at 10h30 in their majestic indoor hall in Kyalami. The performance lasts about 60 minutes.
Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary: The Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary in Midrand is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday – 10am to 4pm.
Midrand Urban Market: Kids love the play area on the grass. There is a huge jumping castle, two puppet shows, face painting, a trampoline and a fun dog agility show.
